Adelaide Fold Belt Project

EL 3966, 3992, 4002, 4003 and 4004
ELA 293/07 and 438/07

InterMet's Adelaide Fold Belt tenements cover a range of locations. from Kangaroo Island and the lower Fleurieu Peninsula in the south to Wonoka and Milang in the north.

Sediment Hosted Copper-Gold and Base Metals

The Adelaide Fold Belt has a long history of mining with major copper mines opened at Kapunda (1842), Burra (1845) and Kanmantoo Callington (1846). This new Project comprise <2500 km2 within a highly mineralised belt with excellent potential for the discovery of sediment hosted copper deposits.

At Burra, surface and underground mining between 1845 and 1877 produced ~700 000 t of ore containing 50 000 t of copper. Between 1969 and 1981, open-cut mining at the same site produced 2 Mt of ore containing 40 000 t of copper. Total production was 2.7 Mt of ore containing 90 000 t of copper and grading ~3.3%. The major copper minerals were malachite, azurite and chrysocolla, with minor chalcocite, cuprite and native copper (from PIRSA website).

Approximately 13 700 t of copper from 69 000 t of ore were produced from the Kapunda copper mine. A resource of 4.3 Mt at 1.1% Cu has been estimated in the supergene oxide and sulphide zone plus a large low-grade resource of primary chalcopyrite–pyrite mineralisation at depth.

Mineralisation is mainly comprised of secondary copper carbonates, oxides and supergene sulphides associated with quartz veins and hosted by feldspathic and dolomitic siltstones of the Adelaidean Tapley Hill Formation (from PIRSA website).

Reconnaissance rockchip sampling by InterMet has shown very encouraging results:

  • 5 samples from Grundy Gold Mine reported gold between 0.74 – 6.79 g/t from EL 3992 (Rapid Bay)
  • Samples from Ropers Mine (near EL  3992) reported gold up to 44 g/t and arsenic up to 34.7%
  • Highly anomalous copper up to 29.74% and gold up to 3.93 g/t from EL 3966 (Leighton)

InterMet is currently planning a soil sampling program over most of the tenements to assist with drilling planned for late 2008.
